Paddling Alabama, from the Mountains to the Sea

Welcome to Paddling Alabama, the companion website for the 631-mile canoe trip my two golden retrievers and I will make in May and June of 2012. We will follow the Alabama Scenic River Trail, established in 2007, which begins where the Coosa River enters Alabama from Georgia near Cedar Bluff and ends at the Gulf of Mexico.

Our trip will follow the Coosa to Weiss Lake, continue along the Coosa until it joins the Alabama River north of Montgomery, then on the Alabama River until it flows into the Tensaw Delta and on to finish at Fort Morgan at the mouth of Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico.

Please join me here for updates on our preparations for the trip, then for updates from the trip itself when wi-fi or cellular wireless signal is available.

I’d like to also welcome any paddlers along the way to join us for any parts of the trip they may be able to do. I’m estimating the trip to take around six weeks so we’ll welcome the company.

This website is sponsored and hosted by the good folks at the University of Alabama Press.

Here are my two companions for the journey – Roscoe and Bailey:

Check back here for frequent (hopefully daily) updates as the preparations and the trip progresses. I’ll be adding pages, information, details, images and video as we go.

It should be a great adventure!

I would love to join you. 631 miles of river would be nice but the lakes (at lease 8) and 30+ miles of open bay are a different challenge.

Big Doc and Northside Vet family are praying and cheering for you daily. Saw your picture in the Co-op magazine and Birmingham news. Did you give that 12 foot alligator a name? Cant wait to get a report in person. Stay dry.
